After our first of three Stack-N-Whack quilting classes last Tuesday, Lauren and I had some homework to do before this week's session. Cutting on the fabric's repeat, stacking eight identical pieces, whacking strips from those pieces, and cutting 45 degree diamonds brings one back to life! By tomorrow's class we need to have all of our diamonds cut: 256 in all, which will yield 32 eight-point stars.
So that we could place the cutting ruler over our stacked fabric, we had to use flat-headed pins which in turn forced me to buy the butterfly pins you see below...aren't they sweet?
Because of the precise stacking, pinning, and cutting, each star set consists of eight identical pieces/diamonds. You can see that the first two photos below are the same exact set, but the first picture has the green and brown point facing in and the second picture has the orange acorn-like point toward the center. Tomorrow night in class I suspect we'll be cutting the background fabrics and piecing the stars together to form quilt blocks.

Nicely done. And three cheers for Amy Butler! What a job... to design fabrics (sigh).
Beautiful choice of fabrics! Bravo!
OOOOOOOh! I actually learned this technique a few years back and it was called "Kaleidoscope Stars." It was so much fun to see them come together.
Everything counts on your fabric choice for turning out cool...and you picked a WINNER!
Love it!!!
Sarah how does that happen?!? When you sew the pieces together dod you lose some of the pattern and what effect does that have? Very interesting. I can see why one would need a class for this one!
Yeah, I mean, you lose a 1/4 inch on each diamond, so it would alter the star's design a little bit, but not too much I think. Yeah, the class is helpful so that we can actually SEE someone do it!
P.S. Sarah: Just wanted to let you know that your "arranged" fiance came of age today. So, now he could have a glass of champagne at the reception and wouldn't be arrested...
That's so cool Sarah! I bet the quilt will be great!
I want to see a square!!
OUCH! katie and julio's new blog gets listed but i still get no vaidation on your blogroll. sniff, sniff. ;)
Hey Sarah, I had to come and check out this post after Amy told me about it. What cool fabrics! I am in awe of how much work I know this must be taking. Very cool...I can't wait to see the finished product. I'll have to be sure to stop back and check it out when you've posted some more on this amazing quilt. Love it!
