A Love Story

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Wegmans is hands-down the best grocery store on the planet. Not Whole Foods, not Trader Joe's, not Publix. People from Western New York and the other few states that are blessed to have a Wegmans gracing their presence will tell you the same thing too, and we can't be silenced! You get a group of Wegmans lovers talking, and you literally can't shut them up.

Beyond its consistently low prices and its faultless atmosphere, they pull out all the stops when it comes to customer service. They've got this Cafe (about which I could write an entire post in itself) that has a plethora of food selections and a cozy ambiance. You can leave your (potty-trained) children in the supervised kids area to play while you shop...for free. The changing table in the bathrooms are stocked with diapers in assorted sizes for parents' convenience...again, for free. Its magazine selection rivals a small bookstore and even has a comfy couch for shoppers' reading pleasure.

Even in all this perfection they are far from pretentious. Unlike other great grocery stores that will remain nameless in this paragraph, there's not an ounce of inflated ego inside the walls of this shopping mecca. They'll also stock lesser-known brands if you ask nicely. I put in a request almost 10 years ago for them to order some canned Skyline Chili and they still have it every time I'm back home. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one who buys it there.

When we visit my parents house in Jamestown, NY, usually the only thing on our list of "must-dos" is a trip (or maybe four) to Wegmans. Sawyer enjoyed one of our outings almost as much as I did. Makes me seriously reconsider living in Chicago. If you're ever near one, I'd strongly encourage you to visit...you won't regret it!

How can I not comment on this post! Please tell me you stocked up on Skyline before heading back to Chicago. Oh Skyline, I would give anything to have you right now!!!

Oh I couldn't agree more! My mom's family is all from Rochester and I've loved Wegmans since I was a kid - our parents used to take all of us cousins there when we were on vacation because we actually wanted to go to the grocery store =)

I never know how spoiled I was having Wegmans as my main grocery store until I had to shop somewhere else...disappointing! (they were even awesome to work for when I was in high school)

Yes, Linnea...we bought three Skyline cans...hardly enough, but a good fix for now.

There is a Wegman's opening up in Massachusetts about an hour from where we live in NH. Sadly I think it might be just a bit too far away for regular visits...

We go to Wegman's when we're in western Pennsylvania the way Steve's family visits tourist spots in Chicago.

By the way, Jon the weatherman, I live in a neighboring town (Londonderry). Where in Mass is Wegman's opening? Do tell!

Melissa, you've GOT to make those!

Amy and Andrew, it says "Chill Out Dude..." :) And it looks like the Wegmans is in Northborough (http://newstores.wegmans.com/northborough/Directions.aspx)

Skyline is made about 3 miles from my house. I can smell it in the morning sometimes (not always what you want to smell at 7am) Cincy chili is the BEST! And I need to get to this Wegman's place. I grocery shop for sport as keeping 3 teens fed is a part-time job! Great post.

Sarah, have you heard of the new Mariano's Fresh Market in Chicago? It's AMAZING - the closest thing I've found to Wegman's this side of 90E! You have to check it out.
