Wanna-Be

Since I was a little girl yearning for toe(point)-ballet shoes, I've wanted to go see a "real" production of the Nutcracker during the Christmas season. I've never been one for Broadway or musicals in general, but for some reason an official seat at the Nutcracker Ballet has always been an aspiration of mine.

This weekend my lovely sister got the two of us tickets to the Joffrey Ballet's presentation and it was all this old wanna-be-ballerina hoped for and more. Tutus and soldiers! Evil mice and the Sugar Plum Fairy! I relived my childhood dreams for 2 hours and wished I had never given up ballet. What was I thinking as a 12-year old!?

When we lived in Chicago, I always wanted to see the Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker, but never go to go. No matter how many times I've seen it, that ballet is so magical to me!

A few years back I got to see the Kiev ballet perform The Nutcracker and it was magical! It's the only ballet I've been to even though I also took ballet and have wanted to go to many productions. Hopefully I'll get out to some others in the near future!

That sounds wonderful! I grew up right outside of NYC, and the theater and the ballet is what I miss the most. I also had secret dreams of being a performer, but even as a child I was too practical to let myself think it could be a reality. Which, was probably a good thing! I am trying to decide how old my daughter needs to be to bring her to the Nutcracker.

Sounds like a wonderful experience. I've never been to the ballet but I would love to go one day. I wanted to learn ballet but my ultimate dream was to be a tap dancer. Until the custom shoe store told me my feet were too wide for tap shoes.

When I was little my Grandma took me to the Nutcracker ballet--it was amazing!

So fun! I always love to go to the BIG nutcracker production at Libertyville HIgh School every year - there is something just plain beautiful about the dancing and the costumes and everything. As a side note, a student in my class has a sister who is a dancer for the Joffrey ballet, and he said that he was at the Nutcracker over the weekend, too! Crazy!

I'm with you! That's awesome! I gave it up at 6 though. Wanted to pick it back up at 12....

so funny... we both had always wanted to go so this year we did! It was our Christmas present to each other. Apparently, Seattle is known for their Nutcracker - Maurice Sendal (Where the Wild Things Are) designs their sets. It was sooo magical! I think I'm a ballet convert now.

I saw this the Saturday before Christmas with four little girls under 8. They were all mesmerized and sat still (with the exception of the 4-year old, who danced when the Sugar Plum Fairies came out) for the entire performance. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was! I'm going again next year!
