If there's one thing that ushers in Fall, it's a trip to an orchard. Cider, hayrides, apple doughnuts, and crisp air...it's enough to put anyone into the spirit of the season. We trekked out to Woodstock, IL this weekend for some apple picking for my friend Alli's birthday. Johnny Appleseed and I split a "1/2 bushel" three ways and we still have a whole lot of apples in our kitchen waiting to be gobbled up.
I was inspired by my sister's genius in making some homemade applesauce, so I followed her lead and went into uncharted territory and made some of my own. A few apples, some water, and a couple pinches of cinnamon and sugar and we had ourselves a delicious dish. Oh Fall, I love you!

Oooh, I want to go back and do some apple picking again this year. Making homemade applesauce was so fun!
We went apple picking on Saturday, too! I can't wait to put our bounty to good use. I'll have to e-mail you some recipes...if you'll share your applesauce one! Oh, and LOVE that picture of TK holding the apples. You're becoming QUITE the photographer, missy!
That is ONE thing I miss about being in a colder climate- apple picking and cidar. There is not too much of that around here. Sounds like you had fun!
Fun, you went on your apple picking adventure. I have SO many apples waiting to be put in crisp, cider and I'll have try apple donuts. Those sound so yummy. Do you have an apple peeler/corer? I just got one and it is amazing!
I really do want to make some apple doughnuts...I'll look for a recipe. I don't have a corer, do you have a recommendation Linnea? Joyce? I hear that they work wonders.
I have a Pampered Chef apple peeler/corer/slicer that is very cool. Mom might have one too. You'll have to try one out sometime. Your applesauce looks so good!

I live in LA but grew up in New Hampshire and this post is making me miss fall LIKE CRAZY!! Apple picking and cozy crisp days... sigh.

Homemade applesauce is my absolute favorite. My grammie always makes it for Thanksgiving and when we had apple trees in the back yard, I made a batch every weekend. In the fall, I like to make up a pot on Sundays and have it for dessert after soup!

I just finished up a batch of apple butter this morning myself! It's just the same as applesauce, but with more sugar and a bit of cinnamon and cloves. I canned it, too, which is the one canning project I still do every year.
We make applesauce, too, but not yet this year.
Did you know you can make combo applesauce with the basic recipe and throwing in strawberries?
Or peaches? (Separately, but hey, go for a combo if it makes you happy!) Then it can be frozen and used all winter long without the canning process if you are shorter on time.

joshua's parents went apple picking this weekend (i was busy with my coding patient) and brought us SO many apples I don't even know where to start! Homemade applesauce sounds amazing. And yes, the twilight books do have a cult following - I see so many people reading them on the el every day! I found out about them through the kids I babysit. So basically, I am pleasure reading on the 12 year old level =).
Foley's Food Mill is all you need to make wonderful applesauce and then you don't have to worry about coring or peeling.
I'm sitting here, looking at a Honey Crisp on my desk, part of the peck I bought at the Farmers' Market in Evanston this weekend. So far, I've had one a day (whole, not sauced) for the last few days, and they've been delicious!
